Treating Addiction: Guy du Plessis Shows Ubiquity Students What Works, And Why

When Guy du Plessis lost family and close friends to addiction, he decided to do something about it - in whatever small way he could. His contributions to the field ended up being huge. That is, he was one of the first people to apply integral theory - known as 'a theory of everything' - to addiction studies and treatment.

"When I came across integral theory I believed I found a meta-framework that could help to address the conceptual and therapeutic challenges that face addiction professionals," said du Plessis. "In some way it felt that it was my moral duty to explore this further as there were very few other individuals applying it."

Du Plessis has since worked in the addiction treatment field for over 17 years, as a researcher, an addictions counselor, the head of treatment, a program & clinical director and a trainer. And now, he's bringing his expertise to Ubiquity University.

He leads the course Addiction And Its Treatment - An Integral Foundation, to teach students what works - and why - in addiction treatment. He says it's all an attempt to address the complex problems, like conceptual chaos and ineffective treatment, in the field.

"The integral foundation of addiction outlined in this course will provide researchers, academics and therapists with a meta-conceptual architectonic of addiction and its treatment that is integrative, and inclusive of best theory and practice," he says. "I am excited by the University's aim at providing education that can have real impact in the world."

In addition to his work with Ubiquity, du Plessis is a Faculty Mentor in the School of Behavioral Sciences at California Southern University, and a Faculty member at the Wayne Institute for Advanced Psychotherapy at Bellarmine University.

He's also the author of An Integral Guide to Recovery: Twelve Steps and Beyond as well as the co-author of Mind-Body Workbook for Addiction: Effective Tools for Relapse Prevention and Recovery, and the soon to be published book An Integral Foundation for Addiction.
