Foundations in Integral Art

Instructor: Michael Schwartz

This course unleashes an embodied integral consciousness of art. The student mobilizes the major art perspective by exercising formal methodologies; comes to learn how to integrate these method-perspectives into meta-theories and higher-order understandings; explores the expressive distinctions amongst various art media; activates his or her own historical consciousness; enacts integrally-empowered art criticism; and considers the possibility of an emergent wave of art making: integral art.

Course Learning Outcomes

By the end of the course students should be able to:

  1. Enact multiple methodologies of art.
  2. Integrate these enactments of multiple methodologies of art into higher orders of understanding.
  3. Recognize differences in art media and adjust their methodological engagement according to what medium is being encountered.
  4. Evaluate and discern quality in works of art including ascertaining when a work of art might be integral.
